Each day hundreds of thousands of plastic bags are used to scoop and dispose dog waste in parks and neighborhoods. While it is great to see responsible dog owners curbing disease and pollution in parks an neighborhoods – it cannot be ignored that these bags take years to break down in landfills.
The greenish movement has spawned innovative companies that now offer bio-degradable dog waste disposal bags that break down in under 90 days when exposed to light, heat, and moisture.
Puplife.com offers great insight into the harm that typical grocery store plastic bags inflict on the natural environment:
"We truly think these are the best dog waste bags on the market today. These wonderful dog waste bags are both biodegradable and compostable! We think that using biodegradable bags to dispose of dog waste makes good sense. Store bought plastic bags litter our streets, backwoods and waterways. Studies indicate that over 100,000 marine animals and 2 million birds die each year from ingesting or being caught up in plastic debris.
BioBags use no polyethylene in the production process and are fully certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to be 100% biodegradable and 100% compostable."

It would be too idealistic to assume that all or even most dog owners would go out of there way to find and use these products consistently since the grocery store provides a never ending adequate supply of free waste bags. However, The Point would be a great tool to either fund raise or show resident’s support for the installation and provision of bio-bags in neighborhood parks.
