YouTube recently added a search bar to embedded videos
While this functionality might be useful to some users, most people don’t want its distracting presence on the millions of YouTube videos embedded around the Web.
It’s fine for YouTube to offer this functionality, but it should be opt-in, not opt-out. We shouldn’t have to go back and update all our old videos to provide the user experience that drove us to choose YouTube in the first place.
The best way to get YouTube to change is to simply stop embedding YouTube videos. There are plenty of excellent YouTube competitors (Vimeo and Viddler, to name a few) who aren’t adding ugly interface elements to their player without warning.
One person taking action won’t make a difference, but if we can get 10,000 active YouTube users to simultaneously switch away from YouTube, we’ll have the critical mass necessary to force them to reconsider their decision.
