What I’m doing: Making a 20-minute audio documentary about the arrests and interviews of eight individuals in Columbia, S.C. in February 2009 as part of Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott’s investigation of swimmer Michael Phelps in an apparent quest to see the Olympics hero in handcuffs. My goal is to interview all eight people arrested and find some narrative gold in there, I hope. I will try to interview Sheriff Lott as well as persons in the Columbia law enforcement and legal community. I would interview various citizens of the Columbia area for their own viewpoints. I’m not framing this narrative in the scope of the American war on drugs. I don’t have any advocacy interviews planned with folks looking to reform marijuana laws. I’m also not trying to overly victimize the persons who were arrested in this investigation, nor do I have a bone to pick with the police. At this rate, we will reach our goal. But we’ve gotta get scrappy in our fund-raising! E-mail and Facebook blasts are awesome, and I encourage everybody on here to do one. But what helps even more is a personal appeal to someone whom you know cares about this issue, and whom you know can spare $20 to make it happen. If they can’t spare that much, of course, we’ll take whatever we can get; because their contribution along with their own fund-raising help goes a long way.
I appreciate everybody believing in this. We CAN do it. Seven supporters after the first weekday of this campaigns existence? That should speak for itself. But let’s just stay at it. We’ve got seven; so if each of us can hook just one person today (Tuesday); that’s solid momentum.
