The John Howard Association (JHA) is a nonprofit group dedicated to protecting the rights of prisoners in Illinois. The jails, prisons, and juvenile detention centers are overcrowded, understaffed, and underfunded. Many inmates have been incarcerated on questionable charges, are abused during their incarceration, and have no support once they are released. The JHA serves as an advocate for Illinois prisoners.

One program run by the JHA is called the Citizen Visiting Program, which recruits volunteers to visit Illinois correctional facilities. This program is one of the only ways that normal citizens can gain access to these prisons. From the JHA web-site:

i will be more than happy to join, i myself already dislike the fact that all these prisoners that we have in Illinois are being treated bad and are having to live in very unsanitary housing and being crowded… so im ready to do what i can to help them out with any problems that they might be facing

Hi all,

I spoke with the people at The John Howard Association regarding dates for training sessions and prison visits. Assuming we can get ten people to join this campaign, here are possible dates when we could all go together:

Training: March 31, April 2, or April 9. Training sessions are held in the office of The John Howard Association, and are a couple of hours long. Free pizza would be included.

The Visit: April 14, 9:30-2:00, at the Department of Community Supervision and Intervention. This is a small, minimum security jail on the south side.

Please let me know if the above visit date works for you, and which training date would be best. If you have a friend who would be interested in this, please contact them and get them to join the group. Visiting the prisons is a truly unique experience, and I hope this campagin tips so we all get the chance to do it!

Thanks,

Katherine

Volunteer with the JHA and help protect the rights of this hidden population. Break down the barrier between public knowledge and the abuses of the correctional system. All volunteers must undergo a screening and training process prior to thier visit. The JHA provides transportation for its volunteers. For more information on volunteering click here.

If ten people join, we will all train and volunteer as a group
