The Talking Farm is a 501©(3) nonprofit organization in Evanston, Illinois seeking to establish a local urban farm and environmental learning center that grows organic produce for local distribution, teaches agriculture, food production and beneficial entrepreneurship, and through a working model, fosters conversations about how we can create a healthier and sustainable food system. Local agricultural programs are thriving in many cities all over the country—indeed, all over the world—because they offer enormous benefits to the local economy, the environment, and the health of our citizens. And it’s easier than you think for us to start our own farm—all we need is a couple of acres of healthy land, and the support of the community, and we can begin producing our own food (10 to 20 tons annually).

I can’t wait to see the farm and hopefully volunteer. Do you know what type of produce you want to grow?

TTF is in the planning stages of developing a “mini-farm” for this, it’s first growing season. By creating a scaled-down version of its full-size farm, TTF will demonstrate the need for a local, sustainable farm as a teaching tool and alternative food system. The 1,000 dollars donated on The Point will cover maintenance costs for TTF for 2008, supplying them with all the necessary tools for their growing season. By providing TTF with its rakes, shovels, trowels and much more, you will allow this project to function on a very basic and important level. Without the money for maintenance, TTF will need to rely on its volunteers for its tools and runs the risk of not being able to meet its potential due to lack of donations.
Donating is easy and simple. Help get this farm off the ground and achieve its mission of providing the people of Evanston with quality produce and a unique educational opportunity!
