For example, let’s say an average student, normally would have a fare burden over four months of $275. Offering a $90 semester pass would provide a huge benefit at a rate people are not likely to think is particularly high. If only 30% of students at a school use transit that often and the rest rarely use it, the full time students who don’t pay effectively subsidize those daily riders who do use transit, recovering the losses for a transit agency (which, in America, is typically under-funded horribly in favor of public funding going to building more highways). Programs like this could also boost ridership substantially, reducing congestion and pollution throughout a region, and providing the environmental, cultural, and economic benefits that transit use brings.
Anyway, I also wanted to note—the machines in Chicago, made by Cubic (who I think also did the systems for BART) have a per-transaction coin limit. You might not even be able to buy one whole fare in all nickels, by design, to prevent the machines from filling up too quickly with coins and thus costing a lot to maintain. If you really intend to protest in this manner by inconveniencing the transit agency and other riders, it might be wise to do a dry run and see how many nickels it’ll allow.
