Employers are among the many businesses that check your credit history to approve an application. Unfortunately, in some cases bad credit could cause you to be turned down for a job. That could be changing soon.
A new law has been proposed that would end employment credit checks with some exceptions: jobs that need national security or FDIC clearance, State and local government jobs, certain jobs at financial institutions, and other jobs that legally require a credit check. Other jobs wouldn’t be able to check your credit as part of the employment process.
The bill, H.R. 3149, the Equal Employment for All Act, was introduced on July 9, 2009 and referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.

Thanks for bringing this up. It’s incredibly important that this legislation passes. Sure, credit checks might be useful in some cases, but often it’s ridiculous to expect good credit to be correlated with good job performance. Further, credit checks often put potential employees in a catch-22. If they don’t have a job, they are more likely to have poor credit and thus more likely to remain unemployed. People of color on average have lower credit, making this a discriminatory practice. Not to mention that credit reports more often than not contain inaccuracies.
