Compulsory seat belt laws are in the best interest of the private insurance industry, not the individual. There is some particular pleasure in removing one’s own safety in favor of comfort, and physical liberty. The fact that seat belts are life-saving devices is undeniable; however, there is no need for government enforced regulation in a situation where one’s own safety is the only issue. Adults should not be mandated to wear them and subsequently fined for not wearing them. Furthermore, irresponsibly implemented seat belt stations are a commuter’s nightmare, adding to traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and carbon emmissions.
