THE PITCH

Westport Academy in Baltimore, MD is a Title 1 school which means over 60% of the students qualify for a free lunch. Many of the students come from difficult situations. A chess program has been established and over 200 kids have learned how to play and they play during lunch and after school. There are several kindergarten students who are playing and they show great potential. One kindergartner has checkmated 2 opponents. Studies have shown that chess makes you smarter. Staff have taken selected members of the chess program to several tournaments and they have won several 1st place trophies and individual awards. It is keeping the kids engaged and showing their great potential through positive thinking and strategy. I am proud of our kids. There is goodness in all our kids, we just have to find avenues to channel that energy in an uplifting spirit. Chess builds character and confidence and assist with school work. I would like to give out free chess sets and USCF memberships.

We played in a chess tournament Saturday at Poly HS in Baltimore, Md. !0 kids participated. The kids enjoyed theirselves and we had a few wins against more experienced schools. As a group they only have been playing for one year. We really have some bright kids, to learn so much in such little time is simply amazing. It was a joy watching kindergartner Cayla Moore sitting at the chess board in deep thought. She has to stand up to capture pieces on the other end of the board.
Chess can save many kids from the mean streets. Chess keeps kids thinking, engaged, disciplined and encourages good manners. Through your assistance I can buy chess sets for kids to take home, pay for chess memberships and other chess related expenses.
Thanks.
