THE PITCH

Contract termination fees unreasonably restrict consumer choice. The rationale forwarded by the cell phone companies is that the termination fee is necessary for them to recoup the subsidy they make in the device. That is a reasonable position only if the termination fee diminishes over the duration of the contract.

I just switched from AT&T to another company. I did have a contract, but it was complete, at least I thought. I switched to another company and was whopped with a $200 bill. What is going on here, even if we stay as long as our contract says we STILL get charged? AT&T is whack!
FYI I joined AT&T (Cingular) in late September 2006, activated my cell on October 5, 2006 and switched companies October 20, 2008. What gives?
