THE PITCH

Every year around the world, millions of hens live the duration of their lives in small cages with room just less than an A4 piece of paper. When they are babies they have the tips of their beaks removed to prevent them from pecking each other.

Many cattle and sheep are also subject to this system, placed in pens barely large enough for them to turn around.

This system exists for economic reasons.

Why should animals have to suffer purely for money?

We want this system to be eliminated completely, and money to be invested in free range systems to improve the welfare of animals and the livelihoods of farmers and property owners.

Even now, people can make a difference by using buyer’s power to create demand for free range products.

    TO: The Point,

I have e-mailed this campaign to the Humane Society of the United States.

They are also working on a request addressing the Transition Team for President-elect, Obama, to:

Urge President-elect Obama to support animal protection
President-elect Barack Obama is working to fill key positions in his administration, among them the Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of the Interior. These positions have a tremendous impact on the treatment of animals and the enforcement of a broad range of laws—including those covering puppy mills, humane slaughter, animal fighting, and wildlife. It is critical that President-elect Obama appoint individuals who have a demonstrated track record of support for policies that protect animals.

Among the candidates being considered for these two positions, there are several who have taken a strong stance on animal protection. Please urge President-elect Obama to seriously consider animal protection when appointing these positions.

    TAKE ACTION
Please fill out and submit the information at the right to automatically send a message to President-elect Obama urging him to consider animal-friendly candidates when making these key appointments. Please remember to personalize the subject line and message below so that your message will stand out and have a greater impact.

    Subject:

Dear Transition Team for President-elect Obama,

I’m writing to urge President-elect Obama to appoint animal friendly candidates for Secretary of Agriculture and Secretary of the Interior. With oversight of key animal protection laws, these individuals have a tremendous impact on animal protection.

For the Secretary of Agriculture, John Boyd, Jr., founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association, and former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, would be excellent choices for this post. However, I’m strongly opposed to former Representative Charlie Stenholm for this position or any other position of authority over animal welfare matters, as he has been extremely hostile to even the most modest animal protection reforms, and has been a paid lobbyist for the factory farming and horse slaughter industries.

For Secretary of the Interior, the best candidates for this position are Representatives Raul Grijalva and Jay Inslee and former Interior Department Deputy Secretary David Hayes. Conversely, I oppose Representative John Salazar for this appointment, as he has been hostile to a wide range of animal protection policies, including efforts to halt the trophy hunting of polar bears and to protect wild horses from slaughter. Salazar was even aligned with former Resources Committee Chairman Richard Pombo in an attempt to weaken the Endangered Species Act.

    (Edit Letter Below)

In order to ensure that these agencies fulfill their statutory missions to protect animals, it is essential that the heads of these two agencies take animal welfare concerns seriously and have a demonstrated track record of support for policies that protect animals.

I hope you will consider the importance of animal protection when choosing individuals for these positions.

    Thank you for your consideration.
    Sincerely,
    [Your name]

I have been distributing flyers from HSUS on anti- fur, animal rights, and animal abuse. I wiil also put into action the suggestions on here.

That sounds great Iris! And nice job Jenny, the more the word is spread hopefully the more successful this will be.

Good to see this has reached tipping point, hopefully everyone has some ideas for action.

The simplest action is for everyone to purchase free range produce wherever possible. If supermarkets (or grocery stores) do not stock this produce, make suggestions to the store manager or a suggestions box if there is one.

As above, it is good to contact government officials, especially for your local and state governments (as the case is in Australia.. not sure about overseas).

Please post what you’re up to – it’d be good to keep up and for ideas!

Hi Ms. Jenny and Ms. Fiona,

    Thanks for responding.

    You’re right!!

    Let’s keep it going.

This is a very sensitive subject for me.

I have contacted my local authorities as well as the state authorities here in PA. I have reason to believe that there are puppy mills being run in and throughout my surrounding area of residence.

The Dog Law Enforcement in my county says they are going to start an investigation with the information I provided for them.

We can only hope!! and I am!!!

Also, there is suspicion to believe, a groomer in my area abuses dogs while they are being groomed. If they don’t cooperate while being groomed they are hung off the side of the grooming table until they calm down.

It happened to my dog. I am still working on having them investigated. I have someone who can prove the abuse.

All of these things take time, I understand, but I am impatient and being very aggresive about my feelings. Believe me!!!

Oh well, I can go on and on.

Thanks again ladies. Have a great day!!!
    Iris

Hi everyone,

Firstly – thanks to all new members for joining :)

I made a video on the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare which I uploaded to Youtube. It is on my channel ‘frizbee9’, and also under the videos link on the campaign page.

Its basic and a bit graphic, but hopefully gets the message across!

Have you signed the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) petition?

The Universal Declaration is an agreement among people and nations to recognise that animals are sentient beings and can suffer, to respect their welfare needs, and to end animal cruelty – for good.

10 000 000 signatures are needed, around 1.7 have signed so far….

For more information, and to sign, please visit:
