THE PITCH

Jump to: Details | Reviews

The captains of Newport Landing Sportfishing are experts at coaxing whales and dolphins to appear for passengers on their whale-watching cruises. While at sea, do your part to help attract these mighty creatures by following these hints:

  • Talk loudly about the whales' favorite movie, Star Trek IV.
  • Bring as many school busses and monster trucks onto the boat as you can. Whales love to be compared in size to these large vehicles.
  • Drop your wallet in the ocean. Sea mammals like to return lost wallets.

Here are some sea-taboos to avoid when trying to spot dolphins and whales:

  • Don’t snap your fingers. It’s not the sound dolphins detest—it’s the opposable thumbs that make it possible.
  • Don’t wear a "Save the Whales" t-shirt. Whales don't appreciate being patronized.

For $13, today's Groupon guarantees you'll see a sea mammal on a 2.5-hour whale-watching trip (normally $30). Newport Landing Whale Watching, located at 309 Palm St. in Newport Beach, guarantees a whale or dolphin will appear while waves gently rock you in a boat. Slurp a beer, smell the ocean breeze, sit in the sun surrounded by one of California's scarcest resources, and see a 36-ton animal carrying 400 pounds of barnacles and whale lice with today's Groupon. Plus, if dolphins board the boat and try to kidnap you, your rescue is included in your ticket.

Newport Landing is a local favorite because of its amiable captains and crew, who say they'll take half off your next visit if whales fail to emerge and you only see dolphins. But so far in 2009, Newport Landing watchers have seen 628 whales, 86,310 dolphins, and one dog disguised as a manatee. This Groupon expires in six months, so if you hold on to it, you might catch the beginning of the Gray Whale annual migration in December.

Reviews

Twelve Yelpers give Newport Landing Sportfishing an average of four stars. Here's what they're saying:

  • A day at sea with some energetic dolphins swimming beneath your eyes (seriously--as close as you can get without being in the water), the beauty of our vast Great Pacific... I simply cannot think of a better way to spend a Friday Afternoon. – Brad W.
  • Flipper's brother came by and gave us a quick show by jumping up right next to where we were sitting... Don't blame the crew if you get motion sickness. They were great, helpful, friendly and very accommodating. – Bong E.
  • They are probably the nicest and most helpful of almost all boats and landings. – Matt L.

so after you buy, you can just choose any date and time to go whale watching w/in a 6 month period?

  • Hey Kristin,

This is Mike from Groupon. After you’ve purchased the Groupon and received it in your email, give our friends over at Newport Landing a call and let them know what date and time you’d like to go within the next 6 months. Be sure to tell them Groupon sent ya as well!

For those of you worried about becoming sea sick,
A good rule of thumb is to try stay low, and close to the stern of the boat. This is where you encounter the least amount of movement. Otherwise, medication will most likely work!

Hope that helps, let us know if you have any other questions.

    cool…thanks for the info! i just purchased 2 tickets…cant wait :)

  • Dawn DeWitt

I thought I was purchasing 3 tickets but when I filled in my credit card info all I got led to was joining the point. so now I’m a member of the point but I have no confirmation, link, or record to say if my purchase went through. How do I check this out . I don’t want to rebuy and then find out I now have double the tickets I need.

  • John Lee

Hi Dawn, I just joined today and was wondering the same thing. Actually, I tried joining several times unsuccessfully. But since I entered my credit card information in several times, I was concerned I bought too many tickets. After I finally purchased tickets and officially “joined” Groupon, I saw that I got a confirmation email welcoming me to Groupon. I called their customer service number and they said that I would get an official purchase confirmation by tomorrow and if not, to call them back. I think if you don’t get the confirmation in one day you should probably call them and find out what happened. So far they seem to be pretty competent and would probably refund you if you did over buy. Good luck!

    Dawn,

What John Lee told you is correct, until the deal ‘ends’, which you see it counting down on the front page, you aren’t charged and you can change your order. Once it closes, you credit card will be charged.

  • darn, i really wanted to get in on this deal and especially the dentistry deal but until just now i really didn’t understand how groupon worked! i thought the payment went directly to the business because gmail would never allow me to open any links within groupon messages — and i wouldn’t have thought to click on the title text anyhow; i did so only mistakenly. now i understand you have to purchase your deal indirectly through groupon if it sounds appealing and then use it at a later time if you can. argh! my teeth hurt and i still haven’t seen any whales. :( hah

  • I used my coupons this past Friday. First off, I suggest parking on the mainland side and taking the ferry across. Ferry crossing prices: $2 per car and driver, each additional adult $1, & each child $.50. Parking at the Newport Landing Sportfishing garage is $8 w/validation… If there is a space available. The biggest downside is having to wait in line to cross with your car. If you’re crossing the ferry on foot, it’s uber easier and fast. The actual whale watching trip was great. The crew was friendly. We saw about 50 dolphins, lots of seals (or sea lions, don’t remember which one), but alas no whales. :-( The company is great about giving you a coupon for 50% off your next full price fair if you don’t see a whale. I definitely recommend using your Groupon! BTW, they have three trips a day; 9am, 12pm, & 3pm. 9am definitely is less crowded. Enjoy!
