Well, given that most Americans eat meat at least once a day and often see vegetarianism as a daunting task I don’t think this campaign is aiming low at all.

Meatless McCartney Mondays! has reached the tipping point! announced 6 months ago

Recently Paul McCartney, a long-term vegetarian and animal-rights activist, asked the people of Britain to cut down on meat consumption by removing it from their meals on Mondays.
We should do the same.
The effect of the meat industry on the environment and global poverty is extraordinary. The amount of resources it takes to feed animals for future consumption could better be spent feeding people or investing in sustainable methods of farming and agriculture. The carbon emissions created by housing animals in mass-quantities also lead to global warming and environmental degradation.
According to Environmental Defense, if every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads.*
Lets make a pledge to eat only vegetarian foods on Mondays and encourage other people to do the same, curbing cli Read More

I’m already vegan, too. I actually think campaigns like this aim too low and reinforce the idea that there’s a difference between exploiting animals for their flesh and exploiting them for their milk and eggs, but I would be pleased if millions of people started eating vegan at least one day a week.

April Beasley replied on Dec 22, 2008I recently converted to vegetarianism, in Texas no less. It’s a overwhelming concept, when you’ve grown up on a meat based diet. It’s wonderful to give people a place to start and this campaign does that. Just one day a week allows someone to see how easy it is to make the switch. Some people will grow into 2-3 days a week. Vadim, I applaud you for doing this. I think this will introduce many into a longterm lifestyle. Mine was a year long pledge which I will see through my lifetime. Thanks for doing this!!

‘Meatless McCartney Mondays!’ has reached the tipping point!
That means that it’s time for everybody to complete the pledge: “we will join this campaign.”
Remember that your participation is critical to the campaign’s success. With your help and only with your help will you successfully achieve your goal.

Vadim Gershteyn replied on Dec 22, 2008Thanks to everyone for joining this campaign! I was happy to see that after a few months it’s finally reached the tipping point.
This means I’ll be eating vegan on mondays. I hope everyone eats healthy and filling alternatives to meat and/or meat products.
I didn’t make this campaign with the intention to hold people to a fixed number of weeks that they’ll participate, but I encourage everyone to follow through as long as they feel comfortable with and hopefully make it into a regular tradition.
The idea of this campaign is to expose new people to vegetarian/vegan diets and eventually bring it into the mainstream.
Good luck to everyone!

THE CONSUMPTION of ANIMAL PRODUCTS which involves the rape of other creatures, as man has been taking part in is not appropriate. It is a major misguidance, similar to the issue of HUMAN SLAVERY. For so long individuals are “under the grip” of something that they can not see out of it ~ that is what it seems like is taking place.

Anonymous replied on Dec 15, 2008I guess I thought a lot of people would read the information on the websites and sort of “take it to heart” and come to an understanding.
Why do you say/think that it is not “understanding”.

When there have been misguidances going on for so long…
IT takes time to understand, I realize that… maybe that is what you are getting at. If it was happening to YOU, what would you call it? Maybe there is a better word choice, I do not know, if there is is let me know ~ fill me in.I mean, we could go around and say “PLEASE DO NOT WRONGLY FORCE ANYTHING IN, ON or AWAY FROM AN INDIVUAL”, however sometimes it’s easier to simply say “PLEASE DO NOT RAPE”, you know?
For a society which generally thinks of “rape” as a sexual thing, as a result of the way the LEGAL SYSTEM defines rape… well… that is the issue here I guess… More broadly speaking, univeraslly moreover RAPE is base term and then other ADJECTIVE terms could be placed in front of the word rape in order to say something like: DRUG RAPE or SEXUAL RAPE, or other types of rapes that may tragically going on.
If someone BEATS YOU UP and steals your wallet when they have no right to do such, that is a FORM of rape.
I am just going by the more UNIVERSAL DEFINITION of rape which was put together from MULTIPLE sources …
If what you are getting at is that the MEAT EATER is not actually doing the MURDER, flat out … well then just think of the notion of a VENDING MACHINE that is set up with the elctronic butchers and each time a person orders a MEAT PRODUCT it’s like that person is ordering the MURDER/execution of another creature….
MURDER is a RAPE of LIFE
The point is that it is WRONG to do those VIOLENT things to other animals. Is that better?
WHAT KIND OF WORLD DO WE WANT
Consider the FRIENDSHIP type love for the creatures, the companionship and the care.
Hope in greater understanding.

neil kenes replied on Dec 15, 2008IN my original statement I do not think I said that meat eaters are rapists.
I said: “THE CONSUMPTION of ANIMAL PRODUCTS which involves the rape of other creatures, as man has been taking part in is not appropriate.”There are numerous situations where eating meat does not involve rapeful activity .
For example, if someone gives you permission to eat their flesh(meat).
In such case there still would be potential HEALTH PROBLEMS with such activity.I, myself, once did rapeful things to other creatures. And I did rapeful things to my fellow man.
I wrongly punched someone once, that is an example of a rapeful thing I did to someone. It is a very sad thing to see what is going on to other creatures.
This campaign about NO MEAT MONDAYS is a start and if it is a mode to provide a REDUCTION, well… I guess if I was a HUMAN SLAVE and I was being whipped seven days a week and they said they were going to eliminate monday whippings…well what would you say?
I simply was thinking more of EIGHT DAYS AWEEK… I love love, love love, you… FULL SCALE AND BEYOND CHANGE ~ man giving back time effort and energy to help other creatures all around this place.See the creatures for who they are as individuals.

Many people are not yet aware of the degree each of us contributes to the CO2 emissions load placed on our environment. Cutting back on meat is perhaps the one change everyone could make with little or no trouble and reduce their carbon footprint significantly.
I’m joining because I’m committed to reducing my cf anyhow, and I think it’s a good idea for other people to consider ways to reduce their own as a means of offsetting the ways they haven’t been able to reduce their cf – like air travel and cars.
It’s my belief that we can all do more to offset our carbon footprints – that we should consider ourselves stewards of the environment – and that we demonstrate responsible consumption on every level. This campaign fits neatly with my philosophy.

Hey Everyone:
I have a blog where I document my vegan recipes. This may be a good resource for people who are planning on not eating meat on mondays. It would be even better to try to eat vegan at least one day a week. Check it out! http://thenewvegan.blogspot.com

Vadim Gershteyn replied on Sep 9, 2008Hi Monica,
Cool blog! Thanks. I’m trying to learn to cook better anyway and I’ve found vegan blogs to be some of the best resources for that anywhere.
