Sean Rye, what you suggest would of course be a step in the right direction (and I’d certainly support a bill to require employers to let their employees off work to vote), but I don’t think it goes far enough, especially psychologically.
The “Pitch” for this cause refers to people being unable to get off work in order to vote, but I think the bigger problem isn’t people being literally, physically unable to vote (afterall, all 50 states have mail-in absentee voting options). The problem is people not being dedicated enough to voting to be likely to go out of their way or take special initiative to make sure to do so. The solution is to make voting the cultural norm, as well as convenient and salient. Having a national voting holiday would help on all of those fronts.
