With today's Groupon, $35 gets you get a $68 ticket to see the limited Boston run of Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple at the stunning Wang Theatre, 270 Tremont St. The Color Purple, based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and presented by Oprah Winfrey, follows the story of Celie. Celie, who is abused by her father, then her husband, struggles on her journey toward personal discovery. Oprah Winfrey's presentation is full of hope, inspiration, and triumph that blends dance with the sounds and rhythms of blues, gospel, jazz, swing, rural roots, and African music.

Oprah Winfrey's presentation of The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Tony awards, including best musical in 2006. This deal is good for select June dates (see the fine print). You’ll get the best available seats at the time of your redemption in either the Orchestra or Mezzanine sections. Just bring your Groupon to The Wang Theatre box office on the day of the show or to get a ticket for a future date. If the $68 tickets are sold out, you'll get the next most valuable ticket, or come back on any other night.

Today's deal is doubly special because we're offering the first-ever Broadway-musical Groupon on the same day comic-magician Penn Jillette was conceived, so read the reviews below and then get your Groupon.

Reviews

Nearly everyone loves Oprah Winfrey’s presentation of The Color Purple, among them The New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and the San Francisco Chronicle.

Yelpers love the old-school feel of the Wang Theatre, giving it 4.5 stars. Here's a sampling of their comments:

  • "As a born and raised Boston girl, I am still enamored with the grandeur of the Wang. It's old school classy and everytime I'm there I feel like I'm transported back in time and going to the theater with my long cigarette holder and elbow length gloves." – Jessica F.
  • "This place is gorgeous. I'd say there is not a bad seat in the house." – Melissa M.
  • "The Wang is beautiful and so very ornate. The bathrooms are just as extravagant. The ushers tend to be sweet older people who direct you to your spot with their little flashlights and a splash of sass. The accoustics [sic] are super and the seats are pretty darn comfy." – Bridget D.

It looks like you cannot reserve seats through this, you just show up some night and hope for the best. Is that the case? Does anyone know?

I did order tickets and got the link…but the instructions are exactly the same. Vague. Maybe when it’s time to actually print the voucher, the instructions will be more clear. My concern is keeping seats together and sell-outs.

    Hi,

There was an error in the write-up for Boston’s “The Color Purple” this morning that has now been fixed. American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino is not playing Celie in the Boston performances of “The Color Purple”. The part is played by Kenita R. Miller. Fantasia plays Celie in the Washington, DC performances of “The Color Purple”, not in Boston.

We are very sorry for this mistake. Please let us know if you would like to cancel your Groupon by emailing groupon@thepoint.com, and we will cancel them right away and your credit card will never be charged.

    Very sorry for the trouble.

    Hi Everyone,

If you buy the Groupon today, you will get an email tomorrow with a link to print out the Groupon and instructions will print out with it.

You will need to bring Groupon to Wang Theater box office to redeem for ticket.

This Groupon is good on June 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, or 25 of 2009. If the $68 seats in Orchestra or Mezzanine are sold out when customer arrives, customer can choose next best seat or return another night. You may exchange your Groupon for your ticket either on day of show, or before that date to ensure you get the very best seats available (also a good idea if you want to make sure you get seats together with friends).

    Best,

I didn’t receive the email link but it says that I pledge the $35 dollars. Is this usual? This is my first groupon.

  • Joe Harrow

    Hi Norma,

You should have received an email notification. I can confirm that you are signed up. Is it possible the email ended up in your spam filter? If you don’t receive an email tomorrow morning with your receipt and the link to print your Groupon, just go to http://mygroupons.com and log in using your email address and the password you used to make this purchase. If you are not able to log in, it is likely the email address in your account is wrong, in which case contact us and we’ll work it out.

I also didn’t receive a confirmation email. I know my email address on file must be correct, because I bought a Groupon a few weeks ago and received the email confirmation right away. Any suggestions? We’re hoping to go to the show tomorrow, so I need the email coupon today!

  • Cassie C

    Hi Jen,

I saw that you sent us a separate email earlier, and I responded to that message. Just checking in to make sure you were able to print everything without any problems!
