Hi, folks! Thanks so much for joining. I’ll post some more news and updates in time, but meanwhile, if you can spread the word to others—even if not via facebook or other electronic means, just with your mouth—we can help convince the major manufacturers to be more responsible environmental stewards.

Kimberly-Clark is the world’s leading producer of paper tissue products and home paper products. Its brand names include Scott, Kleenex, Cottonelle, Huggies, Kotex, and Viva. Yet don’t let the cute little puppy on the toilet paper wrapper fool you: K-C heartlessly and flagrantly refuses to use recycled content in its products and is destroying virgin growth forests in Canada and elsewhere.

medi blum replied on Mar 6, 2008A-ha! I think Kimberly Clark is cracking under the pressure of our mighty eight-person ultimatum: I just noticed Kleenex Naturals yesterday: http://www.kleenex.com/USA/products/tissues_nat….
20% recycled content! Great day in the morning!
No, the boycott is not off. 20% is a mere pittance. And it appears that no other K-C products have recycled content (I’m checking on this).
More news anon. Meanwhile, thanks for joining!

Miranda Paymer replied on Apr 14, 2008I am not using Kimberly-Clark products already because of their environmental policies. I had used them exclusively for decades but will not buy another of their products until they change their policies.

Vanessa Carey replied on Jul 15, 2008This is not acceptable and I am disgusted Kimberly Clarke doesn’t take it more seriously. Our world is ours to share.

Anonymous replied on Nov 20, 2008I am disgusted by what I am reading here. All you liberal Bastards are trying to ruin America and destroy the economy.
You are the reason there is a national recession right now not Wall Street.
If you pigs would just let the market operate as it should and not try to shove your stuck-up ass into everyone else’s business than there would be no problem.
Bottom line:
You do NOT own the forests they are cutting down and have no right to make them stop doing what they are doing. If you want you can buy a majority share of the stocks and force them to change the policy but until you do that, sit down and shut up.

I’ve been digging deep into the websites of the major Kimberly-Clark brands—Cottonelle, Viva, Scott, Kleenex, and Kotex—searching for more information about how much, if any recycled content is used in their products.
This search was brought about by my discovery yesterday of Kleenex Naturals, tissues that contain “20% recycled content,” according to K-C. I suddenly thought, Dear god, my ultimatum is shot! So, dear members, thank you for tolerating my shoddy reportage in first setting up this boycott. Here is the real deal.
Interestingly enough, you have to scratch pretty deep into the websites for Cottonelle et al. to find their FAQ pages, which is where information on recycled content resides. Here’s a short list of answers, straight from the horse’s mouth. Cut-and-pasted from K-C FAQ pages:
Is Cottonelle® Toilet Paper made with any recycled fiber?
No, it is made with virgin wood fibers.
Are SCOTT® Napkins made from recycled fibers?
Yes. SCOTT® Napkins contain recycled and virgin fibers. [But how much? Post-consumer recycled content? More info, please!—ed.]
Are SCOTT® Towels made from recycled materials?
SCOTT® Towels are made from 100% virgin fiber. SCOTT® Naturals Paper Towels, with our proprietary SoftBlend™ fiber mix, contain 80% recycled fiber. The cardboard cores for all SCOTT® Towels utilize 100% recycled paper.
Does SCOTT® practice sustainable forestry management?
You can be confident that Kimberly-Clark Corporation follows sound forest management practices to protect the environment. Kimberly-Clark believes that sustainable forestry is wise management, and uses its forests to ensure continued health and productivity. Kimberly-Clark is committed to and implements plans to protect the natural resources it manages. Every year, Kimberly-Clark plants two trees for every one it harvests. We practice resource recovery by recycling waste materials and products that do not meet our quality standards.
Is SCOTT® Bath Tissue made from recycled materials?
SCOTT® 1000 and SCOTT® Extra Soft Tissue are made from 100% virgin fiber. SCOTT® Naturals Bathroom Tissue, with our proprietary SoftBlend™ fiber mix, contains 40% recycled fiber. The cardboard cores for all SCOTT® Bath Tissue utilizes 100% recycled paper.
Are SCOTT™ Moist Wipes made from recycled materials? Are they biodegradable?
By dry weight, the fabric of the SCOTT™ Moist wipe is approximately 85 percent wood pulp, which is a biodegradable and naturally renewable fiber.
Are VIVA® Towels made from recycled materials?
VIVA® Towels are made from 100% virgin fiber. The cardboard cores utilize 100% recycled paper.
Does VIVA® practice sustainable forestry management?
Kimberly-Clark Corporation, the makers of VIVA® Towels, is very committed to sound forest management practices. Through sustainable forestry and woodland protection plans, we ensure the continued health and productivity of the vital natural resources we manage. Every year, Kimberly-Clark plants two trees for every one it harvests. We also practice resource recovery by recycling waste materials and products that do not meet our quality standards.

By taking part in this ultimatum, we send a strong message to Kimberly-Clark that holds them accountable for their lack of environmental stewardship. We refuse to purchase any of their products until they begin to use recycled content in them.
