OBJECTIVE
Raise awareness of hemp as a key to economic and environmental recovery for the U.S.
TERMS

If we reach at least 50 people, then read "Hemp - Lifeline to the Future" by Chris Conrad.

THE PITCH

Hemp is an unlikely hero; in fact, most people don’t make the distinction between hemp and marijuana. The Federal Government does not make that distinction. It’s current ‘drug war’ policies have lumped hemp in with marijuana and thus, severed opportunity at the neck.

There are many distinctions between hemp and marijuana – not the least of which is the fact that hemp is not psychoactive. It does though, grow like a weed, and in doing so processes four times more CO2 than trees.

Research and development of hemp products has grown to include materials which can be used much like concrete, steel, sustainable fuel source and plastic. These materials cost the environment much less to produce, are environmentally friendly in application, and don’t require cutting old growth forests. Currently most hemp products found in the U.S. are imported.

The hemp market is generating billions. Economy, farmers, consumers, environment could all benefit.

I closed the campaign, “Hemp Growth Key to U.S. Economic and Environmental Recovery”. The book is difficult but not impossible to find at Amazon.

The book is either out of print, or Amazon carries only used copies through independent sellers. Either way, it’s not going to be an easy book to find – which may hinder this campaign. Anyone finding multiple copies anywhere should post to this discussion.

Thanks to all who joined and tipped this campaign in record time! If you’re passionate about this issue and would like to take action NOW, there’s an online petition to overturn the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act.

Thanks again for your support.

Here is something we can do to make this a larger national issue. The more people that are willing to act on issues like this, the more likely they are to move. Check out this campaign

I followed the Wikipedia link and followed the links in that article to watch a film produced by the US government:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemp_for_Victory

Interesting stuff, but not much on economic incentives – 300K Acre goal for 1943 up from 15K acres in production in 1942.

We’re at war. How about declaring war on environmental problems and looking to domestic hemp as a two-fer:
1) reduce environmental footprint of agriculture
2) create agribusiness jobs to fuel economy

I’d like to hear more informed conversation about why this isn’t being done or even addressed by either candidate.

How much revenue do we stand to make with this crop, as a country? Will it also be dominated by major agribusiness? How can such a scenario be avoided? I would imagine KY and WI would be interested in this business, as they are cited in the video as states where the crop does well…

Thanks for reading!

Once 50 people have read the book, then each person is in a position to raise legislative awareness for one of our 50 States. When a presence is established at the State level, then an initiative to legalize commercial hemp growth will find more legislators aware and educated about the issue, and engaged in dialog and debate for change.

It would be nice if we could just shoot for the Feds to legalize hemp, but my instincts tell me that awareness must be raised about the issue and adopted by States before the Feds will rewrite current drug policies to accommodate the legalization of hemp.

Another consideration to bear in mind is that there are currently some major industrial entities that do not want hemp legalized for their own economic reasons. Logging, wood pulp, lumber, big oil – these industries employ highly paid lobbyists to protect their interests on the congressional floor – you can bet the process of raising awareness is only half the battle.

If this campaign is successful – if 50 people read the book – then another campaign which employs direct action could be in order. Until then, I’ll be happy if even 1 person gets as much out of the book as I did. Indeed, every time I pick it up I get a clearer image of the big picture which, until now has been painted by some copywriters working to promote big business.

Most of what we understand about economic reality stems from our personal experience. Unless we are educated as to how the global economy is generated we have only a fuzzy outline of the big picture. The book will educate and open your eyes about issues that are far removed from the current drug war.

It is an epic work, encyclopedic in scope. Even the most casual of political ideologies will be stimulated, and it will likely catapult more individuals seeking common good for the economy and the environment into some kind of active discussion of the issues if not outright activism.

I’m hoping that’s where change starts to happen.
