I want to say a big thanks to everyone who read Beth’s blog and joined the campaign! You all rock!!
I was going to include a picture of the box I made at work today for our gift cards but due to technical difficulties (it is Friday and our camera guy was out) I did not.
The box was easy to set and already I have a few cards in it.
I look forward to hearing about your boxes and how you are getting the word out.

Hello all. I just found out The Point has closed our campaign due to the low turn out. I had no idea we had only two months to complete our goal or I would have pushed harder for new members.

I want to thank everyone who joined. You all have made a difference. Now that we are all aware of how easy it is to recycle gift cards lets follow thru and keep recycling! The next time you are in a big chain store that offers gift cards ask that they consider recycling the cards.

I am going to continue my personal quest to have the big chains recycle. I will write Starbucks & Barns and Noble. You can too!

    Thank you all again,

    Sari

Happy Friday the 13th! It is has always been a lucky day for me. I am thrilled to see so many people signing up; what a great bunch of people!

While we wait for the magic number of 500 we can start collecting the cards ourselves. I found a local funky coffee shop that was more than happy to plant a box for collection. I have a nice flier I attache to each box (I have three boxes out for collection so far) I set up.

If anyone would like a copy of the flyer (it includes our campaign logo) I will be more than happy to send it off to you. Hopefully each of us can find at least one place willing to house a recycling box. This is an ideal way to perk public awareness.

Have a great weekend and thank you again for signing up!

Hey everyone, I just finished talking to an Earth Works Systems rep. He tells me we consumers can start sending in our plastic gift cards to be recycled.

This means we can start our own local programs! I have a box at work now, and my boss is getting his boy scout troupe to start a box.

Once you have a box (big or small) filled up here is where you send it:

    Earthworks c/o Halprin Ind.
    25840 Miles Rd.
    Bedford, Oh 44146

Thanks everyone for doing your part!!

I received a call today from my local SaveMart store manager. The e-mail letter I sent to the corporate headquarters was forwarded to him. Perhaps after seeing in print his lame answer to why disposable gift cards are replacing reloadable ones he had a change of heart. Or maybe he was afraid I would start a bigblog protest. Whatever the cause of his change in attitude is irrevlent. I won a small victory for plastic recycling.
The reason for the phone call I received today was to let me know my local SaveMart will be participating in EarthWorks Systems recycle program. The corporation may or may not make it an overall store policy; they are still “discussing the issue”. I will continue to write them to let them know the blogging community is taking notice of this issue.
I feel good that on this one small issue I made a difference. I feel good that I learned by experience that yes, one person can make a difference.
I want to thank everyone who encouraged me and continue to encourage me. This issue is one that has an easy solution. It is possible to recycle plastic on a large scale. It just takes we the consumer to voice our demands to the big companies. We can stop buying gift cards, we can save our old ones up and send them in ourselves. There are many things we can do to help reduce the amount of plastic in our landfill, we just have to do something!
