THE PITCH

Over the last 50 years non-governmental organizations have been integral in solving some of Latin America’s biggest problems. However, too often Latin American non-governmental organizations face unhealthy competition and redundancy in their projects. New organizations are continuously being created that have goals similar to those of previously existing organizations. This redundancy causes well-intentioned organizations to be less effective and creates a competitive environment where multiple groups fight for the same resources and funds to accomplish their goals and achieve success.

By networking the existing development groups in Latin America we can promote cooperation and communication which will, in turn, create cohesion and increase their effectiveness. The future of community-based organizations (CBOs) in Latin America will be greatly improved by a successful network.

Yet another fruitful meeting recently with university faculty. We met with Dr. Norma Scagnoli from the UIUC College of Business, she has contacts in every country we plan to visit! Dr. Scagnoli has also agreed to be an adviser for our project and is helping us to find funding.

So far we have project advisers from the colleges of Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Business. Next stop is the agriculture college for a truly interdisciplinary group of advisers to match the interdisciplinary nature of our project.

We’ll be spending 3-4 days in Washington D.C. in the first week of July to network with organizations based there, I’m told it’s a major NGO hub so I’m excited to start scheduling some meetings and hopefully find more support there. Let us know if you know of any organizations based in D.C. that we should be talking to.

Before I sign off, our meeting with Norma yielded one somewhat disappointing result, she says we should be cautious about driving a car through areas we lack experience driving in. We had planned on a car being our primary means of transportation, but this is not to much of a setback because Norma says buses are not so expensive as we had previously believed. Obviously we have more research to do, and we’ll learn even more when we’re actually there doing it.

On the ground, we intend to learn about the goals of individual organizations, obstacles leaders have overcome, assets they can bring to and resources they hope to gain from a collaborative network, how the organization has or intends to secure long term funding for their projects, and how working with other likeminded organizations could affect their fundraising capabilities. We will do so through face-to-face communication and recorded video interviews.

As we travel from Mexico to South America conducting interviews with organizational leaders, a profile for each organization will be created to serve as the foundation of the communications network. As profiles are amassed, the network will grow. As we create an organization’s profile we will guide them through the initial process of forming a connection with another organization on the network. Initial guidance will ensure that each participant is comfortable using the network independently, initial questions or confusion can be immediately and personally addressed, and these immediate results will confirm the value of the network as a usable resource.

The two participants in this project are Ari Sahagun, BS in Psychology and minors in Sociology and Environmental Fellows Program, and Justin Ellis, undergraduate student with senior standing towards a BS in Technical Systems Management. We are both in good standing with the University of Illinois. We both also have extensive world travel experience, Ari Sahagun with emphasis in the Latin American countries of Mexico, Peru, and Guatemala.

Over a period of approximately six months, with extensive traveling and first-hand interviews, we will create a network for regional Latin American organizations to address today’s pressing issues. Looking at this project from a broader perspective, organizing CBOs through an online communication network can even provide the opportunity to create a new kind of relationship between large funders and CBOs by creating a collective CBO voice. With the ability to collaborate on fundraising efforts, organizations could begin to apply to funders as a coalition working towards a common goal rather than as competing individual groups.

We are excited by the prospect of this project functioning as a working model of cross-organizational communications for future implementation in other parts of the world. To ensure this is possible we will document each phase of the project carefully and ensure that our research is easily replicated by other groups who may wish to repeat our project in other regions.

Thank you for taking an interest in Nuestra Voz, we’d love to hear from you with any thoughts or questions.

Ari and I met with the representative of a rapidly growing company called 2Checkout today and they are very interested in being involved in the project. To give a little background, 2Checkout calls itself a full-service e-commerce solution. In my terms, it’s a US based group that helps small businesses expand their market. The reason they’re exciting to us is they can help some of the organizations we’re networking in Latin America to establish viable methods of transferring cash internationally in exchange for goods and services (IE volunteers donating to work with a group etc). 2Checkout has the potential to replace some very ineffective and costly methods of currently doing international business. Anyway, we’re excited to have them on board and that we’re turning some heads. Next stop a microfinance company and some professional translating services, the ideas keep rolling in.
