To address the current food crisis (prices have risen over 50% since 2006), Comunicada Foundation has created a revolving fund of hens in Masaya, Nicaragua. We “lend” a woman a flock of six hens, and then she “repays” six hens (the offspring of the originals) six months later. The hens provide eggs and meat, important sources of nutrition for families in a time when even rice and beans is growing expensive.
This campaign is the eagerly anticipated sequel to “Chickens for Sustainable Development.” This project is on its second cycle, and we’ve had 75% repayment rates on the first batch of hens. By far the biggest factor in success is whether the woman had a protective habitat for her hens. So, this time around, we’ve included funds for chicken wire and other supplies to create a protected area for the hens.

Hello, Everyone!
What an amazing experience. Ever held a chicken? Did you know they can sleep in trees? I wanted to let you all know that Comunicada completed the first phase of the chickens project yesterday. We have not yet bought the new chickens with your contributions (and we have to wait a couple months for that), but you can meet the women who are receiving those chickens, and see photos of our first “Chicken Exchange” at the following link: www.lizzynicaragua2009.blogspot.com.
I spoke to many women who said that raising these chickens meant they could sleep at night, literally, knwoing that there was a safety net for their kids. These birds provide eggs and reliable income. Wow. Thank you all again.

Hello, all!
A great, big, feathery thank you for making this happen. Thanks to you all, I will be heading down to Nicaragua in January with $1,000 to buy some chickens.
This is exciting. In a time of serious food crisis, you have made a real difference in the lives of about two dozen women in Nicaragua, and the effects will ripple outward to their families and neighbors, too.
I’ll send an update from Masaya in early January to show you exactly where your donation is going.
Happy, happy holidays.

Hello, Chicken-lovers!
First, a million thanks to those of you who have contributed so far. Time is running short, and I will be stepping off a plane in Nicaragua on January 5th. Will I have a check for $1,000 in my hand? Or will I have to explain that we needed a little more time?
If ever current member upgrades their pledge by $5, we can tip the campaign. My goal is to do so by Sunday.
Can we make it happen? Yes!
Cluck, cluck.

Clare Lasby replied on Dec 20, 2008I just upgraded by another $20. Come on, dear people! We don’t want Lizzy to step off that plane without any money! I know money is very tight for everyone right now, but please ask yourselves what feels better: having dinner at a restaurant, or helping poor families feed themselves? For me, there isn’t even a question.

I just upgraded my pledge. If we all dig a little deeper, and tell our friends, we’ll get this baby tipped! Let’s do it!

Lizzy Gore replied on Nov 23, 2008Thanks, Clare! That’s a great idea. I’ll put in an extra push this week to get some new folks, too.
