THE PITCH

Late last week, official tax documents were released that reveal questionable accounting practices on behalf of Yele.org and its founders.

To avoid controversy and ensure that every penny donated goes directly to the struggling people of Haiti, we have decided to redirect our charity efforts towards The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund.

Thank you for all your support!

P.S. If you would rather withdraw your donation, simply log in to The Point and edit your pledge to $0.

I just received and e-mail from the Point that my contribution would be sent to Yele.org. I thought that this was not going to happen, and that the contributions were to go to the Clinton-Bush Haiti fund. If it is truly going to the Yele fund, I will be tempted to stop payment on the charge. Please confirm what is happening.

    Hi Brett,

Due to programming error, the automated message said Yele. However, all proceeds are going to Bush Clinton Haiti Fund. I am so sorry for the continued confusion. Thank you again for your support.

Hey everyone, sorry for the continuing confusion but to reiterate: ALL proceeds from the Groupon Helping Haiti fundraiser will be donated to the The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund (http://www.clintonbushhaitifund.org/).

Congratulations to Groupon subscribers for donating over six thousand dollars to Haitian disaster relief! However, late last week, official tax documents were released that reveal questionable accounting practices on behalf of Yele.org and its founders (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2010/0114102wyclef1.html). To avoid controversy and ensure that every penny donated goes directly to the struggling people of Haiti, we have decided to redirect our charity efforts towards The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund (http://www.clintonbushhaitifund.org/). This fund was established by President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush to help support immediate relief and long-term recovery efforts in Haiti. All funds pledged through The Point towards, “Helping Haiti!” will be donated directly to Doctors Without Borders. If you would rather withdraw your donation, simply log in to The Point and edit your pledge to $0 (http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/campaign-0-61). We’ll leave the donation page open for a couple more days to give you all a chance to decide. Thank you again for your incredible generosity in this time of great need.

Sincerely,
Groupon

Sorry for yet another message. Proceeds are going to The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, not Doctors Without Borders.

Thank you for your follow through. After I heard about the financial issues of Yele, my heart sank just a little bit. I’m very pleased to see that you’ve taken the necessary steps to ensure that our donations end up in responsible hands, where they will provide the help we cannot give from afar.

I’m actually disappointed that there is so much outrage over what has yet to be proven, but I understand the need to change organizations and thank Groupon for taking the necessary steps to ensure everyone is still comfortable making a donation to help those in need.

I heard this story on NPR this morning:

Why has Groupon chosen Yele Haiti over Unicef or Red Cross? It sounds like the former has suffered from mismanagement and corruption. I now feel uncomfortable having sent my donation to them through Groupon. Katie, care to respond?

  • I heard the same thing and have been reading links re: Jean Wyclef’s Yele.org foundation.

I DO NOT want my money to go to his foundation!

Please credit my donation back to my credit card as it has not been sent to him yet.

I am disabled, my husband is unemployed and our daughter has terminal mesothelioma.

We cannot afford to send Jean our money to spend on his lavish lifestyle.

    Thank you.
