Reading is absolutely necessary for everyone, children and adults alike, in order to advance in and enjoy life. Yet in Peru, especially in Cusco, there is little opportunity for children to read. The municipal libraries have mostly reference materials and newspapers that cater to the interests of adults. The national schools have little to no reading materials. La Pagina en La Puerta was founded and opened in December 2005 to provide a safe place for children to come and read a beautiful collection of (now over 2000) books just for them. The library’s teachers work with the children daily to better their decoding and comprehension skills but mostly to encourage children to develop a love of reading. The library has a homework room and a game room with quality games. There is a cine night and best of all, the library is FREE to all the children. But the teachers must be paid, books bought, programs developed, and there are other costs. So please help keep the doors OPEN to the library!
