THE PITCH

The São João School in São Tomé e Príncipe is a middle school in one of the world’s poorest countries. It was awarded 100 XO laptops, by the Cambridge, MA-based One Laptop per Child, in 2009.

The 100 students chosen to receive the laptops attend class on Saturday mornings for four hours. Most of the students had never before touched a computer in their lives, yet the XOs have taught much more than just word processing and Internet research: They have taught students in their final year before high school (a transition that many people fail to make) to love learning again.

The computers are meant to be used during class every day of the week, but since only 100 of the 612 sixth grade students have access to the laptops, they are limited to using them on Saturdays only. Please help us to raise enough money to buy laptops for the rest of the sixth grade so that they all can have a shot at a well-rounded education and ultimately improve the world around them from the ground up.
