After 31 years of programming, Ross Greenburg, president of HBO, axed cable’s longest running TV series, Inside the NFL.
”The show that the pros watched” was hands-down the best football programming on TV. It’s also a primary reason why the show’s weekly audience, 2 million of us, pay our cable and satellite providers $15+/month for HBO.
Anchor Bob Costas, the consummate professional, and frankly, one of the most respectable guys in the public sphere, felt sufficiently insulted by Greenburg’s move that he called it a “boneheaded decision.” That Costas has his own continuing show on HBO, Costas Now, shows valor.
Chris Collinsworth, along with Costas one of the top four NFL broadcasters (Aikman and Buck the other two), turned down other gigs over the years because of his loyalty to ITN. You’ve got to like Marino, and Carter is solid.

Nicholas Marcus replied on May 27, 2008Yes, ESPN and Fox Sports have ‘highlights’ shows, but Inside the NFL was much more than that. It was serious, compelling and artful TV. Nothing compares to it even remotely.
