What’s that graphic supposed to be? Does it have something to do with Batman?

Bacardi is the largest privately-owned liquor company in the world. Much of its success can be owed to the Cuban trade embargo, which makes it difficult for competitors to enter the US market. In 1996, Bacardi lawyers were influential in expanding the scope of the Cuban embargo, a move that was condemned by human rights groups, the WTO, and most of the international community.
In 1999, Bacardi went as far as to draft a bill to ban distribution of their Cuban-based competitor Havana Club. The legislation is still in place.
In addition to this, Bacardi funds the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) which is a right-wing organization that has sponsored terrorism by Cuban exiles against the Castro government, including a 1976 bombing of a public airliner that killed 73 people.
There are plenty of great alternatives on the market including Appleton and Cruzan. It is not worth supporting one of the world’s most despicable companies for what amounts to a mediocre product.

I recently started drinking rum again after many years, and I’m glad I found out about this situation. Can you tell me if they also produce Captain Morgan’s? It doesn’t say anything about Bacardi on the bottle. My friends buy the expensive stuff from all over the Caribbean, but I buy what’s available.

Nice idea. Graphic will turn off some potential supporters.

Vadim Gershteyn replied on Sep 4, 2008It’s a play off the actual Bacardi logo, which is a bat. Except now it’s drunk and wearing a flag hat.
I agree the graphic’s a little confrontational but so is funding terror groups and supporting the trade embargo. Bacardi hardly builds its image off modesty so I don’t think we need to be held to a particularly high standard when fighting it.
