Technology for Humanity is a 501c3 that brings access to technology to underserved communities. We procure donations of working computers, monitors, scanners, printers, keyboards/mice; and bring them to minorities and people with disabilities. It all goes to churches, schools and community centers.
We also work hard to spread the word about bridging the Digital Divide on the website and in public speaking. All equipment must be less than six years old and the computers must be Pentium 3 or 4. We also accept Macs up to six years old.
There are links to dozens of other sites and we post articles several times a month on related subjects. We discuss many factors and benefits of bridging the Digital Divide:
1. underserved communities: minorities and people with disabilities
2. the environment: keeping computer towers (silicon) and monitors (mercury) out of landfills
3. public policy, social policy: the human and financial costs of underserved communities
There also is a home page link to a page where people can sign up to volunteer their teaching and mentoring services.
Last month we procured a donation of 500 computers from HSBC bank in Prospect Heights, Illinois. The prior month we got 150 computers from Mesirow Financial in downtown Chicago.
We are asking for funding to expand our activities to procure many more computers. We hope to eventually put a laptop in every home in poverty, not just in area schools and churches.
The “One Laptop per Child” program sells an amazing laptop for $188.00. We hope to raise the $100.00 per unit from all types of donors and ask the families to pay the $88.00.
Please go to www.technologyforhumanity.org, and give me your thoughts, would you? Thanks very much!
Andy
